Geoffrey Morgan studied the organ with John Webster and Harry Gabb at Trinity College of Music, and with Flor Peeters in Belgium, becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists at the age of twenty.
In 1975 he won first prize in the London Organ Week Competition, which led to his first solo broadcast on BBC Radio 3. For twenty-six years he was organist to the Alexandra Choir, under their conducto, charlesPrctor, fulfilling many engagements at prestigious London venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall and St. John’s, Smith Square.
In 1978 he graduated from Magdalen College, Oxford, where he held the organ scholarship, and spent the next ten years as an assistant organist at Westminster Abbey, working mostly under the direction of Simon Preston. During this period he played for many special services and accompanied the Abbey Choir on tour in France, Belgium and Switzerland. In 1986 he played at the Royal Wedding of the Duke and Duchess of York. |
He left Westminster Abbey in 1988 to become Visiting Lecturer in Organ at Yale University. In September of the following year he returned to England to take up the post of Sub-Organist at Guildford Cathedral. As well as broadcasting frequently, Geoffrey Morgan has performed in several CD recordings with Guildford Cathedral Choir. He has also undertaken solo recital tours in the U.S.A., Denmark and Australia. His recent solo CD “English Contrasts”, recorded on the organ of Guildford Cathedral, has received enthusiastic reviews.
During seven years as Musical Director of the Fleet and District Choral Society he has conducted much of the standard choral repertoire.
He has always maintained a practical interest in organ building and for ten years was Organ Adviser to the Diocese of Guildford.
