Press Release - 25th February, 2006

Summer 2006 Workshop – 14th July 7.30 PM – 9.45 PM

In June 2003 a member of one of our audiences, a Mrs Jane Randall, suggested we organise a workshop for people who would like to play with the orchestra.

  1. Simply to enjoy the experience.
  2. To see if they would like to become a member of the orchestra at some time in the future.

The committee of the WOS committee decided to rise to the challenge and in July 2003 we held our first evening Workshop.

Much to our delight this turned out to be an enormous success. Some thirteen very young or rusty players registered for the Workshop and appeared to enjoy the experience to such an extent that three became members of the Orchestra.

Obviously the committee decided to repeat the exercise again in 2004 and 2005 and on both occasions with the same happy results.  The WOS annual Workshop has now become a tradition and the next Workshop will take place on Friday 14th July from 7.30 PM – 9.45 PM. and is to be organised and led by Mr Dave Brooks.

The programme consists of practice and instruction followed by a short concert.

All this is done in front of an audience and a certain amount of audience participation is anticipated.

The audience is encouraged to come along a support these brave players for the whole of the evening or just to the concert followed by an American Buffet.

The fact that it is to be free of charge does not mean that it is a non-event.  Members of previous workshop audiences have expressed their sincere thanks for a very enjoyable evening.

Although there is no admission fee the event is supported by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) and there is to  be a retiring collection all of which will go to this worthy charity. The RNLI is a charity that provides a 24-hour lifesaving service around the UK and Republic of Ireland. The volunteer crews give up their time and comfort to carry out rescues in difficult and often extremely dangerous conditions.
